A Pivot
Hey Artist, Making a slight adjustment to the content of this blog. My last post I documented step by step what I am doing for my marketing as a filmmaker. But using my own knowledge is limited. So I have decided that some research is in order. NFTs, Hiring influencers, using fiver, are all things that I know artists should be aware of; but not in my circle of expertise. Therefore, I am going to dedicate some future posts to researching and sharing what I learn simply and cle

How do I WANT to handle this? (Or clean your brushes)
Hey Artist, Maybe you have come up against this situation: You have your plan, you schedule your time, you are all set to do whatever it is you need to do today (Paint, market, budget, whatever) and you sit down and... Nothing. You write one sentence in an hour. You study your lines and you can't focus on the page. Now you can call this a lack of discipline, writer's block, or resistance but I don't think that it's actually a personal failing. We spend so much time fighting t

You Too Can Outsource
Hey Artist, Are you a train wreck? Are you inconsistent? Are you most productive at 2am? Cool. One of the many advantages of being an artist is that it's one of the few jobs where it is sometimes acceptable to be on your own schedule. But that contradicts everything we know about marketing right? Yes. Ideal marketing requires consistent promotion and content delivered on a repeating schedule. But you don't have to be consistent. You just have to find someone or something to b

The Pace
Hey Artist, This is what I'm struggling with. What the hell should my pace be? There are only two things I'm focusing on right now: Making Stuff & Putting It Out in the world. Invariably, one of two things happens. I work at a breakneck paced fuelled by Monster Energy and Modafinil until I crash and lose all of my progress. I pace myself and put out something consistently 2 to 4 times a month and "get a little writing in" each week, but the return is small and I lose all of m

An Actual Marketing Plan (Or, How To Actually Do It)
Hey Artist, It's easy to talk about concepts; get a bunch of creative types in a room and they will talk about art until 3 in the morning, but ask them to create something and half will find a way to escape. It is also easy for me to aggressively write about the necessity of marketing yourself, but today I'm going to give you something more useful: Here is how to actually do it. Full disclosure: I am doing this on the fly, so the plan may adjust depending on feedback and anal

The Win -Win of Contests
Hello Artist, Today I would like you to enter your art in a contest. Don't freak out. The reason that I want you to enter a contest is not for the prizes and recognition. The reason is, (surprise, surprise) marketing. I recently entered a screenplay in a couple of contests just to get it out in the world and off of my desk, and surprisingly; I was selected by one as a finalist almost immediately. I did not end up winning, but I did succeed. Most film contests work like this:

The One Skill You Need (Besides Talent)
Hey Artist, What I'm about to say will possibly offend you. As an artist myself, I'm a little offended too; but the fact that the truth is painful doesn't make it any less truthful. Talent alone will not make you successful. Now I know that everyone has their own version of success. I'm not saying that you need to be famous or rich to be successful. I am not saying that someone else is a better artist than you just because they have gained notoriety and/or a fan base. But, I
