Bite Sized

I'm trying an alternative distribution model.
Currently, the only filmmakers I see actually turning a profit are the ones working on vertical, phone based soap operas. These companies, like DramaBox and ReelShorts are constantly in production, giving overworked people with no time a chance to watch dramas in bite sized chunks while on the bus, waiting for a meal, or on their coffee breaks.
It occurs to me that this is also a boon for independent filmmakers. There is a level of commitment needed to watch an indie film. You don't know what you are going to get, and no one wants to commit to two hours of a movie when they are not even sure they'll enjoy it. Add the fact that audiences are now used to being able to watch the first few minutes of a show before making up their mind, and you have the perfect storm of having your film overlooked.
But maybe, you can get them to watch 3 minutes. Hell, give them an episode or two for free, to give them a chance to decide on your film.
Now if you are a filmmaker, you probably did not dream of having your film streamed in chunks by people riding the bus; but it sure sounds a hell of a lot better than never having your film seen.
Give people a sample. Make it easy for them to decide if they want to commit to watching your story.
So that is the theory anyway. I'm going to see if serializing my films makes it easier to get them seen. I'll let you know how it worked out at the end of summer.
